Kona International Airport (KOA), officially known as Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole, is the main airport serving the west side of Hawaii’s Big Island. Unlike most airports around the world, KOA is famous for its unique open-air terminal design, where passengers move between tropical-style pavilions rather than enclosed buildings.
Located about 11 km (7 miles) north of Kailua-Kona, the airport welcomes millions of passengers every year, mostly tourists visiting the island’s beaches, volcanoes, and resorts. The relaxed layout, surrounded by black lava fields and palm trees, gives travelers their first taste of the Hawaiian atmosphere.
History and Origins of the Airport
Kona Airport opened in 1970 to replace the older Kona Airport located closer to the town of Kailua-Kona. The new airport was built on the lava fields of the Hualālai volcano at Keāhole Point. Because of Hawaii’s warm climate and stable weather conditions, planners designed the airport with open-air terminals to reduce construction costs and take advantage of natural ventilation.
In 2017, the airport was officially renamed in honor of Ellison Onizuka, a Hawaiian astronaut who was part of the Space Shuttle Challenger mission. Today, KOA continues to expand with improved passenger facilities while maintaining its distinctive island-style architecture.
Because the terminal is open-air, it can sometimes be warm. Wearing light clothing and staying hydrated is recommended, especially while waiting for boarding.
